Promoting British Values

Schools are now required, through their provision for SMSC( Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education), to actively promote the following British values and to challenge opinions or behaviours in school that are contrary to them. The various ways we are tackling this are set out below:-

At Leslie Manser these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways:-

DEMOCRACY

  • Electing members for the School Council – our School Council holds regular meetings and is involved in the interview process for new members of staff
  • Electing Playground Buddies and Playground leaders
  • Pupil surveys
  • Talent show auditions for the annual Leslie Manser’s Got Talent contest

THE RULE OF LAW

  • Our school Golden Rules – these are consistently reinforced through the school day through our Vivo stars reward system. Our system is based on positive reinforcement and rewards. The children are taught how rules, rewards and consequences are linked. We have a consistent consequence system throughout the school.
  • PCSO assemblies and community links (road safety, stranger danger)/ fire safety/ e-safety talks
  • Bikeability courses for Y5 and 6
  • Anti bullying week and education throughout the year

INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY

  • Children taking responsibility for their own behaviour
  • Homework
  • Reading diary responsibility
  • School uniform
  • PSHCE curriculum
  • Participation in 50/61 Squadron Annual Re-union at Leslie Manser and associated memorial services
  • Recognition/ whole school assemblies focused on Remembrance Day

RESPECT AND TOLERANCE

  • RE curriculum/ visits to different places of worship
  • Assemblies linked with The Joy Foundation
  • PSHCE curriculum
  • Fund raising events – Children in Need, Red Nose Day
  • Sponsorship of child in Ghana
  • Participation in the Good Neighbours scheme
  • Harvest – support for the Birchwood Community larder

The Key Stage 2 programme of Collective Worship also focuses weekly on an aspect of Promoting British Values throughout the year.
